There is a complex relationship between GPS navigation and GPS jammers<\/a>, and as the use of GPS technology on roads continues to expand, the variety of jamming devices designed to disrupt its operation has increased accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the jammer’s signal can affect GPS devices within a few kilometers, identifying vehicles using jammers can be challenging. To address this problem, a new technique has emerged that utilizes dual-antenna receivers mounted on highway gantries. This approach helps identify vehicles more accurately. In addition to determining the vehicle’s lane, it also provides a precise time signal indicating when the jammer passed the detection system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This innovative approach reduces the ability of drivers using GPS jammer devices to remain hidden, thanks to a simple method of lane detection using a commercially available heading receiver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The detection system includes two antennas, located at either end of the highway gantry. It has previously been used to detect road toll devices on vehicles. During testing, the antennas were connected to the receiver, which recorded the data on its internal disk. Over a seven-day period, 115 hours of data were collected and 45 jamming events were detected. GPS jammers tend to be more powerful, with signals that have rapid frequency changes or jamming characteristics, causing more interference at longer distances than other types of jammers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Countries that rely on vehicle-mounted GPS tolling systems (road tolls are calculated based on distance traveled) are particularly vulnerable to GPS jammers. Not only does a vehicle equipped with a jammer evade paying tolls, but any vehicle within a few kilometers could also be jammed. This approach depends on the receiver’s ability to record the radio spectrum on two antennas without self-interference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
