VoLTE is short for Voice over LTE, which is an IP data transmission technology that enables voice calls to be carried over 4G networks instead of 2G/3G networks. It integrates data and voice services on the same network, thereby improving call quality. Various operators are deploying VoLTE, and it is expected to be fully commercialized in the future. Since the current 4G network does not support VoLTE itself, it cannot provide voice call functions alone. There are two main solutions for 4G voice calls:
1.CSFB (Circuit Switched Fallback):
This solution involves falling back from the 4G network to the 3G/2G network during a call, and then switching back to 4G after the call ends. In the signal bar of the mobile phone, you will only see the 4G signal. The advantage of CSFB is that it is less expensive, but it may introduce a delay of about 1 second during the conversion process, and mobile Internet access will be interrupted during the call.
2.SGLTE (Synchronous GSM and LTE):
SGLTE, also known as dual standby or single card dual standby, requires an additional baseband chip in the phone to provide a separate 2G network standby for calls. With this solution, the phone can operate in both LTE and 2G/3G network environments when a SIM card is inserted. Phones using SGLTE display two signals in the 4G signal bar. The disadvantages of SGLTE are higher costs and increased power consumption, which affects the battery life of the phone.
On the other hand, VoLTE specifically allocates a portion of bandwidth within the 4G LTE network for carrying voice calls. It converts voice to data and uses this dedicated bandwidth to make calls directly over the 4G network. VoLTE has advantages such as shorter call setup time, better sound quality, and clearer video calls. However, for VoLTE to be effective, perfect 4G network coverage is required. Without a 4G signal, the phone will not be able to make calls.
