5G discussion

There has been a lot of discussion about the spectrum that 5G technology will use. After the official release of the first 5G-NR standard, network operators around the world are conducting trials with the goal of commercializing 5G in the next 2-3 years. Various frequency bands ranging from 600 MHz to 7 GHz have been proposed and are being studied by different countries.

Let’s explore the 5G spectrum allocation in different regions:

United States: The United States is at the forefront of 5G research and development. They utilize the 600 MHz (2 x 35 MHz) band, the 3100-3550 MHz band, and the 3700-4200 MHz band as the low-frequency range. For the high-frequency range, they adopt the 27.5 – 28.35 GHz band and the 37 – 40 GHz band. Mobile operators in the United States have already conducted tests in these bands. The FCC has also made the 64-71 GHz spectrum available for 5G, but there is not much activity in this band yet.

Europe: EU countries are utilizing both low- and high-frequency bands for initial 5G deployments. They are using the 3400-3800 MHz band as the lower frequencies and the 24.25-27.5 GHz band as the higher frequencies. Each country within the EU has its own specific 5G spectrum allocation.

China: In China, trials are currently underway in the 3300-3600 MHz band, and there is the potential to use the 4400-4500 MHz and 4800-4990 MHz bands. For higher frequencies, China is considering using the 24.25-27.5 GHz band and the 37-43.5 GHz band.

Japan: Japan is exploring the use of the 3600-4200 MHz and 4400-4900 MHz bands as the lower frequencies and the 27.5-28.28 GHz band as the higher frequencies.

South Korea: South Korea is one of the pioneers in 5G development, with the goal of launching 5G technology during the 2018 Winter Olympics. While a commercial launch has yet to be achieved, they have made significant progress in the commercialization of 5G technology. Currently, they are conducting trials in the 26.5-29.5 GHz frequency band.
